Getting Old Carpet Out Shouldn't Take a Weekend

Tearing up carpet is harder than it looks. What starts as a Saturday project turns into a fight with hundreds of staples, dried-up glue, and tack strips lined with sharp nails around every wall. Then comes the real problem — those heavy, dusty carpet rolls don't fit in your car, and the dump doesn't want them the way you'd think.

Alpha Haulers rips it all up, rolls it out, and takes it away. Padding, tack strips, and all the little staples too. You hand us the room, we hand it back as clean subfloor — ready for new flooring, paint, or whatever's next on your list.

We serve homeowners, landlords, property managers, and contractors across Minneapolis, St. Paul, St. Cloud, and the surrounding Twin Cities suburbs. Single room or whole house, residential or commercial, we're set up to do it in one visit and haul every scrap away the same day.

Why Minneapolis Chooses Us for Carpet Removal

Padding & Tack Strips Included

Most competitors say "carpet removal" and leave the tack strips for you. We pull up the entire system — carpet, pad, strips — all included in one price.

Same-Day Availability

Got new flooring coming in tomorrow? Call us today. Same-day and next-day service available most days.

Upfront Pricing, No Hourly Tricks

Single-room removal starts around $100. Whole-house jobs typically $300–$600. We quote a flat rate before we start — no hourly surprises.

Disposal Included

Some companies charge extra to actually haul the carpet away. Ours is included. One price, full teardown, everything removed.

Know Your Carpet

Carpet Types We Handle

Not all carpet removes the same way. Newer carpet pulls up clean; old glued-down commercial carpet is a different beast. Here's what we handle and how each type affects the job.

Residential Stretched Carpet

Most common residential install. Tacked around the perimeter to tack strips, stretched tight across padding, staples holding the padding. Clean removal — we pull the perimeter tacks, cut the carpet into manageable sections, roll it, and haul it away. Usually the fastest removal type.

Glued-Down Carpet

Older residential or basement installations sometimes use adhesive instead of tack strips. Removal requires scoring the carpet into sections and pulling with more force. We may need to scrape residual glue — let us know in advance if you want subfloor prep included.

Commercial Carpet Tile

Office spaces, retail, basements. Individual 24-inch tiles stuck to the subfloor with adhesive. These come up with a flat bar, one tile at a time. Labor-intensive but straightforward. We do large commercial spaces regularly.

Outdoor / Indoor-Outdoor Carpet

Patio carpet, basement indoor-outdoor, artificial turf installs. Usually glued or loose-laid. We handle these — just note that older outdoor carpet may need extra scraping time.

Before We Arrive

Preparing for Carpet Removal Day

A little prep can save you money and shave time off the job. Here's exactly what to do before we arrive.

  • Clear the room Move small furniture, lamps, plants, and personal items out of the space being carpet removed. Heavy furniture (beds, dressers, sofas) can stay — let us know and we'll quote a furniture-moving add-on, or you can move it to an adjacent room.
  • Empty closets If we're removing carpet inside closets, everything needs to come out first. Door hardware typically stays in place.
  • Protect the floor in other rooms If we're hauling carpet rolls through hallways or other carpeted areas, we'll lay down tarps — but it helps if you have any rugs or runners pulled up in advance.
  • Remove door transitions (optional) We can handle this, but if you're comfortable with a screwdriver, removing metal or wood transition strips before we arrive saves time.
  • Plan for pets Dust and debris get stirred up during carpet removal. Keep pets in another room or away from the work area for the day.
  • Identify what's under If you know whether you have plywood, concrete, hardwood, or old vinyl under the carpet, let us know. It affects how we remove tack strips and clean up.
Subfloor Guide

What's Under Your Carpet — And What to Expect

One of the most common questions we get: "What's under my carpet?" The answer depends on when your home was built and what's been done to the floors over the years. Here's a quick guide.

Plywood subfloor (most common) Standard in most homes built after 1960. Under the carpet pad you'll find a layer of plywood or OSB. Once the carpet, pad, and tack strips are removed, you're looking at a flat surface ready for new flooring.
Concrete slab Basement floors, slab-on-grade homes. Concrete under carpet is common and stable. Any glue or adhesive residue can be scraped or ground smooth for new flooring.
Hardwood (bonus find) Older homes sometimes have original hardwood under carpet. Occasionally homeowners discover beautiful oak or pine floors they didn't know existed. If we find hardwood underneath, we'll flag it before continuing.
Old vinyl or linoleum 1950s-1970s homes often had vinyl installed, then carpet put on top later. The vinyl may or may not contain asbestos — if it looks old and you're planning to remove it, don't disturb it without testing. We'll stop and advise if we see concerning materials.

Common Questions About Carpet Removal

Single-room carpet removal starts around $100. A typical 3-bedroom home with hallways runs $300–$500. Commercial or glued-down carpet is priced separately. We quote a flat rate upfront based on square footage and complexity — no hourly surprises.

Every carpet removal includes the carpet itself, the padding underneath, and the tack strips around the perimeter. Everything rolls into our truck and gets hauled away. We don't leave piles for you to deal with later.

Yes, same-day and next-day service is available most days. Call (651) 373-6627 or text us a photo and we'll confirm availability immediately.

Yes — and that's the biggest difference between us and most competitors. Every carpet removal includes pad removal and tack strip removal. You're left with clean, bare subfloor ready for your next step.

Some carpet can be recycled — especially newer synthetic carpet fibers that go into industrial products. Padding is often more recyclable than the carpet itself. We partner with local recycling facilities and divert what we can from landfill.

For light furniture (chairs, small tables, floor lamps), our crew can move things out of the way. For heavy items (beds, dressers, sofas), we ask that you move them first or let us know in advance so we can bring extra crew. We can quote a full-service option that includes furniture moving.

A single room with clean access usually takes 1–2 hours. A typical 2,000-square-foot home with 3–4 bedrooms takes 4–6 hours. Glued-down commercial carpet or heavy staple removal can extend this. We give you a time estimate when we quote.
