Getting Rid of a Hot Tub Is a Job We've Done Hundreds of Times

Hot tubs are one of the trickiest things a homeowner can try to get rid of. They hold hundreds of gallons of water that have to go somewhere. They run on dedicated 240V circuits that need to be disconnected safely. Many are integrated into decks or patios that have to come apart before the tub can be moved. And a loaded shell can weigh up to 900 pounds before you even factor in narrow gates, stairs, or second-floor access.

That is why we get so many calls from homeowners who tried to DIY it, got halfway through, and realized they needed a crew. Alpha Haulers handles the full process from start to finish — we drain the tub, disconnect the electrical at the panel, disassemble the shell into manageable pieces, and haul every component away. You do not need to move it, drain it, or touch the wiring.

We have removed standard backyard tubs, 10-foot swim spas, indoor installations in basements and sunrooms, and abandoned tubs that had been sitting for a decade. Whatever you are dealing with, we have seen it before and we know how to get it out cleanly.

Indoor Hot Tubs

Bathroom or sunroom installations. Tight access? We've done it.

Broken or Abandoned Tubs

Previous owner left it? Been sitting years? We take it regardless of condition.

Our 4-Step Hot Tub Removal Process

01

Free Estimate

Call or text (651) 373-6627 with a photo or description. We will give you an upfront price based on size, access, and any add-ons like deck removal.

02

We Drain & Disconnect

Our crew drains the tub safely (we use your yard drainage when possible, otherwise we bring pumps). We handle 240V electrical disconnection at the panel. If you have gas lines, we disconnect those too.

03

We Disassemble

For standard tubs, we cut the shell into manageable sections. The cabinet, pump assembly, and plumbing are separated for proper recycling. This usually takes 2-4 hours.

04

We Haul It All Away

Everything gets loaded into our trucks. We clean up the area so you can't even tell the tub was there. Components go to appropriate recycling facilities.

Why Minneapolis Homeowners Choose Us for Hot Tub Removal

240V Electrical Expertise

Hot tubs run on 240V circuits — not something every junk crew knows how to handle safely. We do this every week and know exactly what we're doing.

Full Drainage Included

Most companies make you drain the tub first. We don't. We bring the pumps and handle safe water disposal on-site.

Deck Removal Available

If your deck was built around the tub, we can remove both in one visit. No second contractor needed.

Transparent Upfront Pricing

Most hot tub removals in Minneapolis cost $300-$600 depending on size and access. We give you a firm price before we start.

Recent Jobs

Real Hot Tub Removals We've Done

Every hot tub removal is different. Here are three recent jobs that show the range of what we handle.

6-Person Backyard Hot Tub + Deck Surround

Minnetonka customer had a 7x7 hot tub built into a wraparound cedar deck. Couldn't just pull it out — the deck boards went over the lip. We removed the decking around the tub first (about 40 square feet of cedar), then drained the tub to their yard, disconnected the 50-amp circuit at the panel, and disassembled the shell in sections. Full job: about 5 hours. Deck + hot tub removal combined was less than half the cost of hiring two separate contractors.

Hot Tub Through a Narrow Side Gate

Edina homeowner wanted an 8-foot round spa removed from a backyard only accessible through a 36-inch gate. Tub was 7 feet across. We disassembled the cabinet in the backyard, cut the acrylic shell into four sections, and carried everything out through the gate in manageable pieces. No damage to the gate, fence, or landscaping. Took 4 crew and about 4 hours.

Abandoned Hot Tub, No Electrical Power

Foreclosure property in St. Paul had a 10-year-old hot tub sitting full of stagnant water — the power had been cut months before, and the property manager just wanted it gone. We brought portable pumps to drain the slimy water, verified the electrical was already disconnected at the panel, and hauled the whole thing away in one visit. Quick work since there was no disassembly needed — just drainage and haul.

The Technical Side

Electrical, Plumbing & Permits — What You Should Know

Hot tubs are one of the more technically complex appliances in a home. Here's what actually has to happen on the electrical and plumbing side — and what your city might require.

01

Electrical

Most residential hot tubs run on a dedicated 50-amp or 60-amp 240V circuit. We safely disconnect at the breaker panel and cap the wires for safety. If you want the circuit fully removed (not just disconnected), that's an electrician's job — we can recommend one. Most customers leave the circuit capped in place for future use or resale.

02

Plumbing

Most hot tubs have no permanent plumbing connection — they fill from a garden hose. But some high-end models have a dedicated water line and drain. If yours does, we disconnect both before removal. No extra cost, just part of the job.

03

Permits

Removing a hot tub doesn't require a permit in most Minneapolis-area cities. If deck removal is part of the job, check with your city — some require a permit for deck demo. If electrical wiring is being fully removed (not just disconnected), that typically requires a licensed electrician and possibly a permit. We can point you in the right direction.

Pricing Factors

What Can Make Your Hot Tub Removal More Expensive

Most hot tub removals run $300-$600. Here are the factors that can push a job toward the higher end.

  • Tub size

Standard 4-6 person tubs are in the base range. 8-10 person swim spas and oversized units add $150-$300.

  • Access challenges

Narrow gates, stairs, second-floor decks, or indoor installations require disassembly and more crew time.

  • Deck integration

If the tub is built into a deck or recessed, removal may require deck modification or partial deck removal. Adds $100-$300 depending on scope.

  • Full deck removal

If you want the entire surround deck gone too, we price it separately — usually $200-$600 depending on size.

  • Electrical work

Standard disconnect is included. Full circuit removal (through the wall) requires an electrician and isn't part of our service.

  • Water disposal

Draining to your yard is free. Hauling off-site due to recent shock/chemical treatment or septic system concerns adds $75-$150.

Common Questions About Hot Tub Removal

Most hot tub removals cost between $300-$600 depending on the size, access challenges (stairs, narrow gates), and whether deck removal is included. Oversized tubs or difficult access can be more. We give an upfront price after a phone call or photo — no surprises.

Nothing. Seriously. You don't need to drain the tub, disconnect the power, or move anything. Our crew handles all of it. Just make sure there's a clear path from the tub to where we can park the truck.

Yes. If your hot tub is recessed into a deck or surrounded by one, we can remove the deck as part of the same job. This avoids having to hire a separate contractor and saves you money compared to two trips.

Hot tubs typically run on 240V dedicated circuits. We safely disconnect at the panel and cap the wires. If you want the circuit fully removed, we can coordinate that — but most people leave it in place for future use.

Most of the time we drain to your yard or storm drain (depending on chemical treatment). For heavily chlorinated or recently-treated water, we bring portable pumps and haul it off-site if needed.

Yes. We've removed tubs from rooftop decks, second-floor balconies, and through gates narrower than the tub itself. We disassemble on-site as needed to get it out in pieces.

Typically no. Removing an existing hot tub doesn't require a permit in most Twin Cities municipalities. If deck removal is involved or you're changing the electrical, your city may require one — we can help you figure that out.
